The aim of the course is to give to the student an organic knowledge of the fundamental laws of classical mechanics (elementary dynamics and rigid bodies, short account of fluids) and the main principles of thermodynamics and electrostatics; the student should become able to solve in an autonomous way simple problems .

Physical quantities. Dimensions and dimensional analysis, units and systems of units, fundamental units.
Vectors. Scalar quantities and vectorial quantities. Vector operations.
Elementar kinematics Elementary dynamics. Newton’s law of motion. Frame of reference: inertial and accelerated reference frames. Short account of gravitational law.
Work and energy. Kinetic energy. Work performed by a force. Conservative force and potential energy. Conservation of mechanical energy.
Momentum. Discrete or continuous mass distribution: center of mass. Impulse. Conservation of linear momentum.
Rigid body. Kinematics of rotational motion (angular coordinates, angular velocity and angular acceleration). Relations between linear and angular kinematic quantities.
Rigid body dynamics. Moment of force; center of gravity. Angular momentum. Moment of inerzia. Kinetics energy and work in the case of rotational motion. Equations of motion. Koenig theorems. Conservation of the angular momentum.
Statics. Conditions for the static equilibrium of a rigid body.
Harmonic oscillator. Properties of the harmonic oscillator and examples.
Fluids. Fundamental quantities and laws: short accounts (pressure, density; Stevino’s, Archimede’s and Bernoulli’s laws).
Thermodynamics. Fundamental quantities of thermal physics. Temperature and thermometers. Gas laws. Thermodynamical work, heat, specific heat, latent heat. The principles of thermodynamics. Carnot cycle. Thermal engines and efficiency. Entropy.
Electrostatics. The electrical charge. Coulomb’s law and electric field. Gauss’ theorem and its applications. Electric potential energy and electric potential. Conductors in electrostatic equilibrium, the electrostatic shield.
Capacitors. Energy stored in a capacitor. Equivalent capacitor of a network of circuit elements: series and parallel combinations. Polarization of matter and dielectrics: the dielectric constant.
Electric stationary currents. The Ohm’s law. Equivalent resistance of a network of circuit elements: series and parallel combinations. Kirckoff’s laws. RC circuits.

Attività d'esercitazione

Practical exercises, consisting in the solution of simple problems whose text was previously assigned.

Modalità d'esame

The examination consists in a written and an oral test. The written examination can also be taken in form of a few written tests proposed during the development of the course.

The knowledge of the elementary matematics and of the differential and integral calculation is recommended, therefore the courses of Analisi Matematica AB e Geometria should be previously attended.
