Theory and design of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures A ( 5 CFU )

Aim of the course is to provide a specific knowledge for the design and the construction of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. A state of the art of the most important theoretical and experimental outcomes is provided. Moreover, recent Italian and European codes (Eurocode1, Eurocode2, Eurocode8) are described.

Mechanical properties. Concrete: compressie and tensilestrenght, modulus of elasticity, combined stress behavior. Steel reinforcement: monotonic stress-strain law, yield stress, bond characteristics.
Design methods. Allowable Stress Design, Ultimate Strenght Design and Limit States Design. Characteristic and design actions, partial safety factor, load combinations
USL for flexure and axial load. Strain diagram at ultimate limite state. Ultimate tensile and compression axial load. Members subjected to flexure. M-N interaction diagrams. Biaxial bending and axial force.
USL for shear. Member not requiring shear reinforcement, standard method, variable strut inclination method. Dimensioning of web reinforcement and detals.
USL for torsion. Behaviour of solid and thin-walled cross-section, variable angle truss mode, combined shear and torsion.
Serviceability limit states. Control of stress. Cracking axial load and bending moment. Stabilized cracking and crack spacing. Tension stiffening. Control of cracking and evaluation of crack width. Bending moment-curvature diagram, checking deflection.
Detailing of reinforcement. Spacing bars, anchorage of reinforcement, laps and mechanical couplers. Bundled bars.
Detailing of members. Minumum reinforcement, details of anchorage, regions with discontinuity in geometry and action. Columns, beams, slabs, walls, deep beams, footings.

Attività d'esercitazione
Examples of design of reinforced concrete structural elements are proposed completed of detailing.
